CSFC Cambridge 11 February 2025

Greetings from CSFC Cambridge!

In this week’s newsletter, we share highlights from the recent Cambridge Physics Experience and our first-ever International Movie Night. We also look ahead to Enrichment Week, featuring tailored supra-curricular resources and the exciting Amgen Biomtech Experience.

Cake and Juice Study Options

Sarah Nash, the director of Study Options, joined us for our latest “Cake and Juice Series”. Here, she delivered a seminar to 11 students interested in applying to Australian universities. Having been the director of this application service for now 20 years, Sarah shared her extensive knowledge and experience. Every year, we make very strong and competitive university applications to institutions all over the world. In terms of Australia, we have interest in the prestigious “Go8” institutions, including: Australian National University; Monash University; University of Adelaide; University of Melbourne; University of New South Wales; University of Queensland; University of Sydney; University of Western Australia.

Student Wellbeing

We recently held an assembly focused on the importance of seeking support for stress and low mood before these feelings escalate. While some stress can be motivating and help us achieve our goals, chronic stress and persistent low mood should not be overlooked. Just as one would seek help for persistent physical pain, such as knee or back issues, students should also seek support when facing ongoing mental health challenges.

Mrs Payne-Wheeler outlined various ways to access help before these issues become overwhelming. For example, students can speak with their heads of house, college counsellor, and explore support options with the college nurse or GP. Mrs Payne-Wheeler emphasized that seeking professional help doesn’t necessarily mean medication will be prescribed; in most cases, lifestyle changes and talking therapies are sufficient toward supporting individuals through difficult times and seeing positive changes.

Cambridge Physics Experience

Our students recently had the opportunity to attend the Cambridge Physics Experience, a day filled with invaluable insights. The visit began with a presentation on how to apply to Cambridge, followed by a tour of the stunning and historic Queens College campus, including its libraries. Students also had the chance to engage in a Q&A session with a Cambridge Student Ambassador.

Next, they visited the renowned Cavendish Laboratories, where they attended a physics lecture, providing them with a glimpse into life as a Cambridge University student. During the lecture, students were challenged with a physics problem to solve. Diekola and Danny’s group was the first to crack the problem, earning a University-level physics textbook as a reward!
Following the lecture, students participated in a hands-on physics practical, giving them a taste of what university lab work entails. This experience allowed our students to envision themselves studying natural sciences at Cambridge University, provided expert advice on applying to the institution, and offered a deeper understanding of student life—including practical living situations, social life, and the clubs and societies available at Cambridge.

Lights camera action!

Our College Cultural Ambassador recently hosted our very first International Movie Night, transforming the English for Academic Purposes classroom into a cozy movie theater! Complete with popcorn, themed sweet treats, and a big screen, students were immersed in an enjoyable evening of cinema. The event saw a fantastic turnout, with students representing our diverse community. It was the perfect way for everyone to relax and unwind after the busy Exam Practice Week. Kataryna was an exceptional host, working tirelessly to bring her vision to life and ensuring that everyone felt welcome and well taken care of throughout the evening.

Enrichment week

As we approach Enrichment Week, students and parents will have received a day-by-day guide outlining recommended supra-curricular materials—such as readings, videos, podcasts, and other engaging resources—that students should aim to explore. Additionally, students are encouraged to visit the Careers Office throughout the week for tailored support regarding higher education and career pathways.
A key highlight of the week will be the Amgen Experience, hosted here at the college. Amgen, a leading US biotechnology company, offers a wide range of career opportunities in fields such as biomedical research, engineering, and research and development. During the Amgen Biomtech Experience, students will have the opportunity to work with research-grade equipment and techniques, using them to analyze DNA—an exciting hands-on experience in the world of biotechnology.
