Cardiff Sixth Form College student, Mithun, has finished as the runner up in the EESW Student of the Year Competition. The Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) run numerous activities across Wales, providing students with the opportunity to gain practical experience working with industries, businesses and higher education. Activities include designing, making and racing a model F1 car, working with companies on real engineering problems, experiencing life as an engineering undergraduate at University and investigating, designing and modelling an innovative solution to an environmental problem.
Students must
- Have taken part in the EESW Project in 2019-20
- Be studying at least two STEM subjects at A level (or equivalent)
- Have submitted a CREST Award to EESW
- Be intending to study a STEM based subject to degree or HNC/HND Levels
Entrants also had to submit a proposal explaining why they thought they deserved to be EESW Student of the Year 2020. Mithun was successful (along with two other students from CSFC) in getting a virtual interview and was shortlisted in the final four nominees for the award. Despite finishing runner-up, Mithun felt the experience was a ‘privilege’, “It is a real honour to be the recipient of such a prestigious award, many holders of which are people whom I greatly admire. The calibre of those who take part within this scheme is of the highest order so it is a privilege to be named as the runner-up of this award, competing against the most talented STEM students nationwide.
“I feel a great sense of pride that the hard work and effort which I have committed has paid dividend however my overwhelming emotion would most certainly be a sense of gratitude towards all of those who have helped me in my academic journey including my family, peers and teachers, in particular Mr Jenkins who dedicates numerous hours to organising the EESW project at CSFC.
“I hope to utilise this financial reward to further invest in potential future projects to develop my knowledge and skills and propel my passion for engineering to help prepare in the best way possible for the leap to university which I hope to make next year.”
