On November 22-23rd, a delegation of four CSFC students took part in the inaugural Dukes Renaissance Scholars event. The students, Sofia Mleinik, Elizaveta Shulgina, Claire Chan and Sylvia Chen, brought their passion for a diverse range of subjects in to play when exploring topics ranging across food sustainability, Socratic discussions on the pitfalls of international sanctions, the absence of truth in Brexit politics, the legacy of the Renaissance and the death of liberalism. The students also collaborated with fellow scholars from across the Dukes organisation to present a highly engaging debate on the thorny issue of 100% taxes for the super-rich.
Reflecting on the event A2 student Claire Chan said “I had an enlightening experience during the symposium, where I got to engage with bright minds from across the country in discussions on sensitive current affairs. It truly honoured its theme of Challenge, I felt personally stretched and challenged not only by the opinions of other students but also by the topics we were exposed to.”
A great deal was learnt, challenging arguments encountered and new friendships fostered. We look forward to hosting the next of these invigorating symposiums in Cardiff in the spring and will be inviting a new group of AS students to apply for places soon.
