Competitions

Students are encouraged to participate in competitions to develop a wider understanding of their subjects, gain life skills and provide further demonstration of commitment for university applications.

Please see below some of the competitions we take part in:

Model United Nations Conference

A simulation activity in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations.  It involves and teaches participants speaking, debating and writing skills in addition to critical thinking, teamwork and leadership abilities and enables students to develop deeper understanding into current world issues.

NASA Space Settlement Design Competition

Recreates the experience of working in an aerospace company’s proposal team.  Students work in teams and are asked to design all aspects of a space colony from the colony’s structural design, atmosphere regulation and waste management to how the colony will keep its inhabitants happy and healthy. The competition is open to students from around the world with finalist in the UK visiting Imperial College and winners (Cardiff has achieved this five times) visiting the NASA Research Centre in the USA.

National Schools Challenge

A general knowledge competition for schools in the UK which uses the same rules as the University Challenge. Each team comprises four members who progress through regional tournaments to the national finals to context the Schools’ Challenge shield.

Science Olympiads

Designed to improve problem solving ability and analytical skills, chemistry, biology and physics Olympiads are conducted on two levels every year.  Students take exams for which they are awarded a bronze, silver or gold award depending on the marks they achieve.

Senior Maths Challenge

A multiple-choice competition, the Maths Challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Welsh Schools Debating Championship

Open to every secondary school in Wales, over 60 teams participate with teams of two speakers through regional rounds to the final in Cardiff.  Cardiff Sixth Form College hosts the regional rounds and has won the competition on many occasions.  There are a variety of other debating competitions held at the College and students at the College have often represented Wales in international debating competitions in Thailand, Romania

Young Enterprise Scheme

Provides students with the opportunity to set up and run their own real company whilst at college.  Guided by a member of staff, students develop skills, knowledge and experience proven to have a long term impact on their lives and careers.  Over 30,000 young people take part in the programme with winners from each region taking part in the HSBC Young Enterprise Innovation Awards in London where 12 companies battle it out to become the UK’s Young Enterprise Company of the Year.
