Cardiff Sixth Form College Announces Major Plans for Development

Posted: 6th July 2021

Outside of Cardiff Sixth Form

A new Campus in Cambridge

From 2022 Cardiff Sixth Form College will be opening a new campus in Cambridge for A Level students.  Cambridge is a natural fit for Cardiff Sixth Form as many of our students go onto study there at University level and having access to top quality teaching staff, university course-specific lectures, ease of travel from London and of course a wonderful environment in which to live means we are very excited about this development.

Two of our other Dukes schools, St Andrew’s College Cambridge and Sancton Wood School are already located in the city and exciting facilities plans will be shared in due course.  Many of our staff including careers, boarding and Heads of Department will be working across both campuses with the Principal, Gareth Collier, heading up the Cambridge campus and Head, Tom Arrand, leading at Cardiff.

Two Year GCSEs from September 2022

As many of you already know we are launching our new two year GCSE programme in September 2022 which will be run as a four-year preparation for top universities.   This is a natural academic progression for the College and, following in the footsteps of its reputation for academic excellence, will be a GCSE course with a difference.   As well as 15 subjects and a wide range of extra-curricular activities including sport, music, art, drama and clubs, societies and events, students at Cardiff Sixth Form College will have an extensive supporting curriculum.  This includes physical education and sport, personal and social education, effective communication, English for academic purposes, critical thinking, leadership and teamwork and a GCSE-specific university preparation super-curricular programme, giving us more time to help our students gain those top grades taken into account by leading universities when making offers and develop the skills and breadth of maturity required for success.

Having topped the small school league tables with our one year GCSE programme in 2019 our second year results were even more successful with 93% of students getting all A* and A grades and 97% A*-B in 2020.  Successes from our first cohort includes two students gaining places at Oxford for Medicine and PPE as well as Cardiff GCSE graduates to King’s College for PPE and Hong Kong University for Medicine.  We are currently designing a new GCSE Zone for both our one and two year GCSE students including an extensive common room, study areas and supervision which will be opened in readiness this September.

Further developments are also planned over the next few years but there is no doubt that this is a particularly exciting time in Cardiff Sixth Form College’s development.
