Debate Round up March 2026

Posted: 26th March 2026

Cardiff Sixth Form College students have enjoyed an exceptional run of success across both national and international debating competitions, showcasing their skill on some of the most prestigious stages.

At international level, two College teams competed in the Oxford University Schools Debating Competition, facing a highly competitive field of 126 teams from countries including Singapore, Australia, India, Beijing and Peru. Yuxuan, Kushi, Edgar and Giselle performed outstandingly, with both teams securing two wins against strong global opposition. Edgar, Wenli and Aahana also deserve recognition for stepping in on the day to represent a school unable to attend.

On the national stage, the College has also made remarkable progress in the English-Speaking Union MACE Debate, a prestigious competition that saw 375 schools enter last November. Chuka, Maya and Braden delivered an impressive performance to win Round 3, placing them among the final 12 teams who will compete at Dartmouth House in London this May. Hosted at the College, the round featured leading schools including Cheltenham Ladies’ College, King Edward VI School Stratford, Hereford Cathedral School and St John’s Cardiff. The team successfully opposed the motion “This House Would legalise recreational marijuana for adults,” demonstrating confident, persuasive argumentation against a strong proposing side.

Not many students can say they have debated in the historic Cambridge University Debating Chamber, but Myla and Nandinee can. After qualifying from the regional round, they travelled to Cambridge to compete in the Cambridge Schools Debate Finals Day, a world-class event featuring teams from across the globe, including Singapore, Canada, Australia and Kenya, debating challenging motions such as whether humanity should prioritise adapting to climate change over restoring the Earth.
