Debate and Model United Nations Round-Up – December
December proved to be a busy and rewarding month for Cardiff Sixth Form College students, with teams taking part in a wide range of debating, public speaking and Model United Nations events across the UK. From prestigious university debates to national competitions, students demonstrated confidence, critical thinking and impressive communication skills throughout.
Business and Professional Women’s Public Speaking Competition
Two College teams represented Cardiff Sixth Form College at the Business and Professional Women’s Public Speaking Competition, taking on formal roles including Chairperson, Speaker and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks with professionalism and poise.
Maya spoke compellingly on “How your attention became the world’s most valuable resource”, while Kushi addressed her passion for music and the impact of declining funding for music education. Both teams are to be congratulated for their strong performances, with one team progressing to the next round of the competition.
UCL Schools’ Debate
A team of our novice debaters took part in the UCL schools debate. It was a fantastic effort from Chuka, Ava, Braden, Giselle, Maya and Coleen who were up against some of the toughest competition in the world of debating. With topics ranging from the responsibility of big corporations in fighting poverty, the UN voting system and government obligations to protect negative liberties, our teams were put through their paces. Chuka & Ava came a hair away from making the finals which for only their 2nd debate is a phenomenal achievement. Well done to our talented teams!

South Hampstead Debate
Three experienced College teams competed in the South Hampstead Debate, which attracted 60 teams in total. Students engaged with demanding motions, including discussions around political diversity within global leadership programmes. Each team won at least one round, an excellent achievement that reflects their high-level debating ability.
Model United Nations at Clifton College
Ten students attended Clifton College’s inaugural Model United Nations Conference, representing Afghanistan and North Korea. Angie and Linda both received Best Speaker awards for their outstanding contributions, with Linda recognised for her work on Human Rights and Angie for her role in the Economic Committee.
Model United Nations at Queen’s College, Taunton
Twenty-one students travelled to Taunton to participate in Queen’s College’s Model United Nations Conference. Representing Egypt, Pakistan and Chad, students debated global issues including child workers’ rights, the regulation of artificial intelligence in military applications and the Israel-Palestine conflict. Commendations were awarded to Fred and Izuma, with Highly Commended awards going to Rosanna, Colman and Victoria.
Mock COP Climate Negotiations
Twelve students took part in a World Climate Negotiation Simulation organised by the British Council at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff. Acting as national delegates and climate activists, students worked collaboratively to limit global warming to below 2°C and secure financial support for vulnerable nations, engaging in a day of lively and insightful debate.
Congratulations to all students involved for their commitment, enthusiasm and outstanding representation of the College throughout a packed and successful month.
