Sarah, an 18-year-old student from Singapore, has been accepted to Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge University to study Medicine. Sarah, who achieved four A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics in her A levels today plus an A for her EPQ, studies at Cardiff Sixth Form College and has demonstrated exceptional academic performance and a strong commitment to science and community service.

Sarah’s interest in medicine is partly driven by personal experiences, with her grandfather suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) focused on the viability of stem cell therapy to cure Alzheimer’s, exploring its promise and associated risks. Her grandfather’s need for one-on-one care motivated her desire to alleviate such burdens through medical advancements and to help other families in a similar situation.

Sarah is a keen volunteer, working at the Cambridge Science Centre, where she explained science concepts to families, enhancing their understanding and interest in science.  She has also worked with autistic children and those with cerebral palsy, planning activities and excursions and observing sensory sessions in a Vietnam hospital where she shadowed doctors and surgeons.

Sarah developed an interest in neuroscience after attending a summer school focused on neuroanatomy which inspired her to delve deeper into the subject.  She became a member of the Stanford Neuroscience Journal Club where she engaged in discussions with the faculty about ongoing trials and clinical research.

She has also undertaken work experience at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, interacting with specialists and Cambridge University medical students and has enjoyed being mentored by an alumni from Cardiff Sixth Form College, now studying medicine at Cambridge University, who provided invaluable guidance on her personal statement, interview preparation and overall application strategy.

President of the college Debate Club, despite having no previous experience before joining Cardiff Sixth Form College, the club won the regional round of the Cambridge University Debate Competition and was invited to the nationals under her leadership.  This summer she plans to learn coding for computational neuroscience research further expanding her skill set.

Said Sarah:  Coming to the UK I had ambitious dreams and wanted to go to a school with an outstanding academic reputation.  My parents have been really supportive and know how independent and determined I am and they understand that I want to make an impact in the field of neuroscience.”
