Leo, an 18-year-old scholarship student from Blackwood, has secured an offer to study Physics at Oxford University, a testament to his academic excellence and dedication. Gaining four A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry today in his A levels, Leo’s journey from Blackwood Comprehensive School to Cardiff Sixth Form College and now to Oxford is a story of hard work and ambition.

Leo’s interest in physics was sparked by watching educational videos, particularly those featuring Brian Cox and his explorations of the cosmos. His fascination with the subject grew as he delved into strange theories and the practical applications of physics, recognizing the field’s vast employability. His commitment to learning has consistently driven his academic performance, earning him a full scholarship at Cardiff Sixth Form College.

A natural leader, Leo has been involved in debating at high levels, competing at Oxford and UCL. He reached the national finals of the MACE competition organized by the English-Speaking Union, winning the regional Wales and West of England finals. These experiences have honed his speaking and critical thinking skills. This year, as President of the Debate Club, he runs weekly sessions and mentors AS and GCSE students in preparation for competitions.

Leo’s leadership extends beyond debating. As Head Student at Cardiff and formerly Head Boy at Blackwood Comprehensive, he has developed strong teamwork and organizational skills. He organised a debating taster day back at Blackwood Comprehensive School, explaining debating concepts and holding a live debate for local pupils.

“Said Leo:  We didn’t do debating at my old school and I wanted to help other local students from the Valleys access the kind of high level skills that I was fortunate to learn at Cardiff Sixth Form College and help them think they are able to achieve great things and obtain a place at a top university.  Many of the students really enjoyed the day and I am hoping that I may be able to do more of them in the future at other local schools.”

Achieving a stunning 13 A*s at GCSE, Leo’s academic prowess and determination have been evident from an early age. He attended Oxbridge Admissions Workshops, worked with a tutor, and participated in a free summer school program at Oxford, preparing rigorously for his entrance tests and interviews. His dedication paid off, securing him three interviews in mathematics and physics, leading to his offer from Oxford University.

Said Cardiff Sixth Form College Principal, Tom Arrand: “Leo aspires to become a scientist, driven by his love for mathematics and physics. His journey from being a top student in his local school to excelling in a competitive environment at Cardiff is a testament to his hard work and adaptability”.

Born in Australia, Leo moved to Wales, where his mother is a secondary school teacher and his father a solicitor. Despite the challenges of long school days and commuting, Leo has thrived at Cardiff, appreciating its international environment and the diverse perspectives of his peers from around the world.
