Cardiff Sixth Form student, Jane, has been awarded a scholarship from Trinity College at the University of Toronto. Jane, who has been admitted to Studies in Humanities at the Faculty of Arts and Science at Trinity College and has also received offers from multiple UK universities.
The scholarship will greatly help with the costs of education during the first year of study.
Jane, who is projected to achieve four A*s in her A levels is studying Economic, Maths, Further Maths and History, has become very passionate about pursuing Economics as a subject whilst studying at the top school in the UK.
Said Jane: “I am really looking forward to studying Economics further and especially enjoyed developmental economics during my A Level course. I am still in the process of exploring what career path I would like to pursue with an Economics degree and have found public policies really interesting.”
Jane, who is from Bangkok, is currently President of the Debate Club at Cardiff Sixth Form College and Vice President of the Economics Society. She was very appreciative of all the hard work the careers department have given to her in applying to the University of Toronto:
“Miss Bendle has been instrumental in helping me apply to the University of Toronto, a very well-regarded university in Canada” said Jane. “The application process is very different and new for me. Instead of writing a personal statement, I had to write several short essays on different topics such as identifying unfairness, what I did about it and what I would do differently looking back. Canadian universities are of course interested in the grades achieved, but they also want to know you as a person and allow me to be less specific in how I want to take my degree. For example, I can choose the modules I would like to take from all areas of the arts and science faculty and structure my course according to my interests.”
“I wouldn’t have applied to Canada if Miss Bendle hadn’t suggest it and been so supportive. She organised for the University of Toronto to come and speak to students here at Cardiff Sixth Form College.
Hayley Bendle commented: “We are extremely proud of Jane and all she has achieved. She has worked extremely hard and has to do a lot of extra research and introspective thinking in order to answer the essays required. It is a very different application process to that studying at a British university and we are very experienced here, at Cardiff, in advising our students on worldwide universities. All students are very much individuals and so it is important that we as staff can enable them to develop and follow their dreams wherever that takes them.”
