A top sixth form college on an ice trip

Cardiff Sixth Form College’s International Citizenship Experiences (ICE) allow our students opportunities for work experience, observation and placements in a wide variety of institutions relating to future career options. ICE gives students an understanding of working practices and conditions along with the chance to build team building and leadership skills.

On Saturday 22nd June over 50 students departed Cardiff Sixth Form College. One group on a flight bound for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, another group for Mumbai, India and a final group heading to Arusha, Tanzania.

The Kuala Lumpur trip began on Sunday 23rd June with a flight to Kuching and then placements beginning the following day. The veterinary placement went to Primavet, the Economists to the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), the Law students to Thomas, Shankar Ram and Co (a law firm) and the Engineers to the construction and design company MMC Gamuda. There was also plenty of fun with day trips to a cultural village, Damai beach, Semenggoh Wildlife Sanctuary, Batu Caves, an elephant sanctuary and even a walk up the tallest towers in the world, the Petronas Towers.

In India, a transfer followed the students’ arrival at Mumbai to Pune and then onto an orientation and dinner. Rao Nursing Home was the placement for the students, once there groups were able to experience working in a hospital first-hand. Among other things, the students took part in Physiotherapy workshops and basic life support training, as well as witnessing operations in the operating theatre. In their free time, the students had the amazing opportunity of a Bollywood Experience Day visiting a working film and TV studio, this proved to be popular with students and staff alike!

Students visiting Tanzania had the chance of a hospital placement and volunteering at an orphanage programme in Arusha. This included Swahili lessons, clinical skills teaching, mock MMI sessions and medical ethics training. In their free time there were waterfall walks, dinner at a local restaurant, a visit to a natural hot spring, BBQ’s and a safari trip which was an invaluable experience enjoyed by all.

ICE trips at Cardiff Sixth Form College are an important addition to our extensive career services and the life changing experiences afforded to them create lasting memories and understanding of their chosen fields of future work.
