Cardiff Sixth Form College has been shortlisted for the Independent Schools Association Award for Excellence and Innovation in Mental Health and Wellbeing.

The top sixth form has introduced a new programme, known as CREATE© which aims to develop students who, whilst attaining academic excellence, are independent, self-sufficient young adults with a genuine care and interest in others in the wider world.  Made up of six strands, underpinned by articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – community respect, engage, active, thrive and enrich – the programme is designed to increase wellbeing, resilience and confidence amongst the student body through the winning of bronze, silver and gold awards.  The awards, gained through the accomplishment of set key tasks, are linked to curricular, extra-curricular, volunteering and careers activities that the students are involved in and will provide useful evidence for personal statements, university applications and interviews.  An online portfolio tracking system has also been developed which will be monitored by the Head of House team.

Said Cardiff Sixth Form College Head of Pastoral, Lisa Morton: “The programme will encourage students to get involved in new areas, increase their resilience, self-esteem and ability to acknowledge the importance of their own self-care”. CREATE© also links to our in-house pastoral programme – a themed 10 month programme of activities which interweaves with numerous themes and engages with a variety of national and local wellbeing developments and initiatives; including key recommendations put forward by the Donaldson Report.

Said Cardiff Sixth Form Principal, Gareth Collier: “CREATE© is a unique pastoral achievement programme designed by Lisa Morton, Head of Pastoral at Cardiff Sixth Form College.  I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for the ISA Award but even more delighted that this bespoke programme gives real impetus to the tremendous work being done at the College to embrace mental health and wellbeing proactively and positively.”
