22 students attended a trip organised by the Physics department at the College to Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire last week, where they were joined by Dr Hollis and Mr Grimes. They took part in a Particle Physics Computer Workshop, where a number of the students succeeded in identifying the characteristic, subtle trace of the famous Higgs Boson (Higgs Boson is an elementary particle).
A tour of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory facility was well received by the pupils, and the students also attended a number of engaging interesting talks. Of particular note was a lecture by Doctor Kristian Harder who outlined, in humorous detail, the purpose and goal of the CERN facility in Switzerland. All activities were highly relevant to the students’ AS Physics course this year, and will certainly aid their academic progress.
