What GCSEs Do You Need to Get Into Cardiff Sixth Form College?

Posted: 9th June 2026

One of the most common questions we receive from prospective students and their parents is about the GCSE requirements for entry to Cardiff Sixth Form College. The honest answer is that we look at each application on its own merits, but there are some clear benchmarks that give you the best chance of securing a place on your chosen programme.

Here we want to walk you through what we look for, what we assess, and how you can put together the strongest possible application.

Our General Entry Requirements

As a guide, students applying for A Level study at Cardiff Sixth Form College will typically need a strong set of GCSE results, usually a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English and Maths. For the most competitive and specialist subjects, we look for grade 7 or above in the relevant GCSE.

International students however do not need GCSEs and equivalent qualifications are fine.  We test all students for entry and interview everyone.

These are benchmarks rather than rigid cut-offs. We understand that individual circumstances vary and we take the time to look at each application carefully. A student whose overall profile suggests real potential may well be considered even if one or two grades fall just short.

Subject-Specific Requirements

The GCSE grade requirements for A Level entry will vary depending on the subjects you intend to study. As a general rule:

  • Sciences, Maths and Further Maths: typically grade 7 or above in the relevant GCSE subject
  • Languages: typically grade 7 or above in the target language
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: typically grade 6 or above
  • English Literature and Creative subjects: typically grade 6 or above in English

We recommend checking the specific entry requirements for your chosen subjects when you apply or getting in touch with our admissions team directly for guidance.

English Language Requirements for International Students

Cardiff Sixth Form College has a thriving international community. If English is not your first language, we will also ask for evidence of your English language proficiency. Full details of our entry requirements for international students can be found on our admissions pages.  For one year GCSE students this is IELTS 5.5 and for A level IELTS 6.5.

If a potential A Level student only has IELTS 6.0 on entry we offer intensive English language support on our August Pre-Sessional Programme to help international students reach the level they need before beginning their course.

What Else Do We Look For?

GCSE grades are important, but they are not the only thing we look at. We want to understand your aspirations, your motivations and whether Cardiff Sixth Form College is the right environment for you to thrive.

Our admissions process includes an assessment of your application form, a review of your current school’s reference, English, Maths entrance exams, a non-verbal assessment and an interview. We want to hear about your ambitions and understand what you hope to achieve. A student who is genuinely motivated and who understands what studying A Levels in a focused, high-achieving environment demands will always stand out.

Preparing Your Application

The earlier you begin thinking about your GCSE profile and your post-16 plans, the better. We recommend visiting us at one of our open days or international exhibitions to get a feel for life at Cardiff Sixth Form College, to talk to our Regional Managers and to speak to current students and staff about what studying here is really like.  When you are ready to apply, you can start the process through our online application form.
