Structure and Breadth
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme requires students to study six subjects across different areas of knowledge, alongside a core component that includes Theory of Knowledge, an extended essay, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The IB is deliberately broad and that breadth is one of its defining features.
A Levels, by contrast, allow students to specialise. Most students take three or four A Level subjects, going deeply into those areas rather than covering a wider range. The UCAS and US College Application Process
For students applying to top universities, A Levels fit naturally into the UCAS process. Around 85% of students in the UK study A Levels and this is no accident. Predicted grades, strong personal statements, and teacher references combine to form a powerful application. Our experienced UCAS team supports students through every step of the process.
A Levels are also recognised by US universities and here at Cardiff Sixth Form College many of our students also take Extended Project Qualifications where they research and present an essay or project of their choice which is recognised by universities and often means students are given less rigorous offers.
