Cardiff is one of the UK’s most underrated cities and for international students considering their options, it deserves much more attention than it typically receives. At Cardiff Sixth Form College, we believe the city is one of our genuine strengths. Here we want to share what makes Cardiff such a positive environment for students coming from overseas.
A Welcoming and Diverse City
Cardiff has a long history of welcoming people from across the world, and that tradition runs deep in the city’s character. International students consistently find Cardiff to be a friendly, safe, inclusive place where they can feel at home quickly. The city lacks the anonymity that students sometimes experience in much larger cities and that human scale makes it easier to build connections and feel part of a community.
Affordable and Practical
Compared to London and many other UK cities, Cardiff is genuinely affordable. Eating out, getting around and enjoying the city’s cultural offer are all accessible on a student budget. That matters a great deal for students and families who want to balance the cost of a high-quality education with a comfortable standard of living.
The city is compact and easy to navigate. Public transport is reliable and many of Cardiff’s best restaurants, galleries and leisure facilities are within easy walking or cycling distance of the college.
Rich Culture and Things to Do
Cardiff is a proper capital city, with all of the cultural amenities that implies. The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium, the Wales Millennium Centre, and the lively waterfront at Cardiff Bay are just some of the landmarks that students can explore.
The Cardiff Bay area is particularly special and we are fortunate to have spectacular facilities right in the heart of this vibrant waterfront area. You can read more about its proximity to our college and the many amenities available on our Cardiff Bay pages.
Beyond the landmarks, Cardiff has a thriving independent food and arts scene, excellent shopping and a social calendar that offers something for everyone.
Safe and Student-Friendly
Safety is a primary concern for families sending children to study abroad and Cardiff compares very favourably to most major UK cities on this measure. International students at Cardiff Sixth Form College feel safe in the city and supported by both the college and the wider community.
Our pastoral and boarding teams are experienced in supporting students from overseas, including helping students navigate life in a new country, managing homesickness, and building the routines that help students settle in and flourish.
Strong Transport Connections
Cardiff has good rail connections to London, Bristol and other UK cities, making weekend travel and school holiday journeys straightforward. It is only 2.5 hours from Heathrow Airport where most of our students fly into with excellent road and rail transport links, making it practical for international students to travel home during the longer school holidays.
