What Is the Difference Between a Sixth Form College and a Traditional Boarding School?

Posted: 16th June 2026

If you are exploring options for sixth form study, you will likely have come across both traditional boarding schools with sixth forms and dedicated sixth form colleges. They can appear similar on the surface, but the experience of studying at each is quite different. At Cardiff Sixth Form College, we think it is worth being honest about those differences so that students and families can make the best choice for their circumstances.

Age Range and Focus

One of the most significant differences is simply who else is in the building. A traditional boarding school typically educates pupils from age 11 or 13 (or even younger) through to 18. The sixth form exists within a much larger school community and the priorities of the institution have to serve a wide range of age groups.

Cardiff Sixth Form College, despite its name, is actually not purely a sixth form college.  We also offer GCSE courses for younger students as well as A levels and our student population is aged 14-19 years.  As an academic school aiming to get students into top universities we are concentrating on the all-important exam years where the results a student gets are marked independently and appear on a student’s UCAS statement.  Here, the entire culture, the timetable, the pastoral structures and the physical environment are all designed for students aged 14 upwards. There is no junior school pulling in a different direction.

Academic Intensity and University Preparation

Cardiff Sixth Form College was founded with a very clear purpose: to help students achieve the highest possible A Level results and win places at the world’s best universities. Our academic programme is intensive and purposeful. Optimal class sizes, specialist teachers, and a culture of high expectation combine to produce results that are consistently among the best in the country.

You can read more about our academic approach and our results on our A Levels pages.

The Boarding Experience

Both traditional boarding schools and sixth form colleges offer full boarding, but the boarding environment at Cardiff Sixth Form College is distinctly different. At Cardiff, our boarding house is more structured for GCSE students with earlier bedtimes, supervised homework and organised activities.  However, for older students who are beginning to manage their own time, they are given more freedom to arrange their own study schedules and manage their own lives.  All students in our Cambridge campus and nearly all of the community at our Cardiff campus boards, so being comfortable with excellent facilities, having supportive houseparents and lots of weekend and evening activities is key, alongside providing students the space to relax.

Our boarding provision is designed to support growing independence. It is structured enough to keep students focused, but relaxed enough to feel like a genuine step towards adult life. Students are treated as young adults, not as children, and that shift in culture makes a meaningful difference.

Community and Student Culture

Cardiff Sixth Form College has a distinctively international and forward-looking culture. We do not trade on heritage, tradition, or history in the way that many long-established boarding schools do. Our culture is one of ambition, innovation and mutual support. Students come from across the UK and from all over the world, and the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives enriches the experience for everyone.
