One of the most common questions from prospective students considering boarding at Cardiff Sixth Form College is simply: what is life actually like day to day? It is a fair question. Boarding can mean many different things depending on the school, and we think it is worth giving an honest, detailed picture of what a typical day looks like for our boarding students.
Morning: Starting the Day with Purpose
Boarding students at Cardiff Sixth Form College begin the day with a structured morning routine. Breakfast is available in our dining facilities and students are expected to be organised and ready for their first lesson of the day. The routine of rising, eating, and moving to lessons is an important part of the rhythm of boarding life and students quickly settle into it.
The morning timetable is full and purposeful. Lessons are typically knowledge-based but interactive, with teachers who expect active participation and genuine engagement. Students arrive at lessons having done the reading or preparation required and the pace of learning reflects the ambition of the student body.
Lessons and Academic Life
The academic day at Cardiff Sixth Form College is structured around a full timetable of A Level lessons and guided study time. Students typically take four A Level subjects, sometimes more, and the timetable is designed to give each subject the teaching time it needs. Two-year GCSE students take 9 or 10 GCSE subjects and one-year GCSE students 6 subjects giving them a strong academic foundation.
Between lessons, students use the library, study spaces and common areas. The culture at Cardiff is one of purposeful work alongside genuine connection with peers. It is a place where it is normal and admired to be serious about your studies.
Afternoon Activities and Enrichment
Life at Cardiff is not purely about academic work, even if academics are central to our purpose. Late afternoon brings opportunities for sport, creative activity, clubs and social time as well as a full super-curricular programme where students undertake activities pertinent to their career. Students from across the world bring different interests and perspectives, and the social life of the college reflects that diversity.
These activities matter not just for wellbeing but because universities and employers increasingly look for students who have interests and commitments beyond their academic subjects.
Evening: Structured Time in the Boarding House
Evenings in the boarding house are structured around super and extra-curricular clubs and activities, study periods, dinner and personal time. Our houseparents and residential staff are present and accessible throughout the evening. Students are not left to manage entirely alone, but they are also treated as young adults who can be trusted to use their time well.
The boarding environment at Cardiff is warm, purposeful, and genuinely supportive. Students describe feeling looked after without feeling constrained and that balance is something we work hard to maintain.
Weekends at Cardiff
Weekends at Cardiff Sixth Form College offer a mix of free time, organised activities, and social events. Students can explore the city, spend time with friends and recharge. Cardiff and Cambridge are vibrant, student-friendly, safe cities with excellent transport links, great culture and a genuinely welcoming character. School trips are organised, students go to the gym and play sport, go into town to do some shopping or have coffee and evenings often include watching films, going bowling or getting involved with some of the many House activities. There are photography competitions, fashion shows, football matches or events every weekend where students come together to meet up, mix with students in different year groups and enjoy downtime, fun and time to relax.
