CSFC reaches Finals of Rotary Young Interviewer
Earlier this month, AS-level student Isabel Jones represented Cardiff Sixth Form College in the District Final of the Young Interviewer competition at Howell’s School in Llandaff, Cardiff.
Established around 10 years ago, the Young Interviewer contest is sponsored by Cardiff Bay Rotary Club and gives sixth form students the opportunity to interview well-known professionals on a topic chosen by the guest. Previous guests have included Neil Kinnock, Ann Widdecombe, Paul Flynn MP, the Chief Constable of Gwent, Sir Emyr Jones Parry, former British Permanent UK Representative to the UN and many AMs.
Isabel was very lucky to have the opportunity to interview Lord Murphy of Torfaen, who was Secretary of State for Wales from 1999 – 2002 and 2008 – 2009, and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2002-2005. The picture opposite shows Isabel (far-right) with Lord Murphy and contestants from other schools/colleges.
Isabel quizzed Lord Murphy on the topic of peace negotiations. One of the most interesting questions she asked him was, “What is your opinion on making all education secular in order to encourage integration from a young age?”, to which he replied with an emphatic, “No!”
Speaking about how it felt to interview Lord Murphy, Isabel told us, "It was a very interesting experience to get to question someone whom I would never have met in ordinary life."
Congratulations to Morgan Haigh from Whitchurch High School, who was announced as the winner of the Final!
