Course outline

This is a unique experience programme which aims to introduce international students to British culture, improve their English skills and give them a taste of what they can expect if they choose to join Cardiff Sixth Form College's A-Level programme.

Dates: September - December

Cost: £12,100 (covers tuition, accommodation, meals, trips and excursions, airport pick-up/drop-off on set dates)

We will be offering two possible routes of study: English Language and Academic

English Language

To maximise the students’ experience, the course combines intensive English language tuition (approx. 10-15 hours per week ) with fun, educational trips and excursions to attractions such as Bristol Zoo, Cardiff Castle, St Fagans, Alton Towers, Oxford and London, to name a few.

What the course entails

The one-term English Language course, running from April until the end of June, is targeted at students with at least an intermediate level of English.  The aim is to give students the opportunity to practise and improve their English skills in a communicative way within a British setting.

Students receive intensive practise in each of the four language skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and they also develop their range of vocabulary and grammatical structures. By the end of the course, it is expected that students will have become more effective users of the English language and be able to use and understand more complex language in a variety of situations.

Classes are very much learner-centred and students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. They are advised to develop good language learner habits, such as the effective recording of vocabulary, the highlighting of common mistakes and the skilful reading of articles from a variety of publications.

Some of the verbal topics on the course include:

  • Describing a personal memory
  • Describing an important event in your country’s history
  • Recommending places to go in your city/country
  • Giving tips on how to behave
  • Talking about things you couldn’t live without
  • Retelling a story
  • Discussing new laws
  • Summarising a newspaper article

In addition, there will be an opportunity for students to engage in topical debates and deliver presentations based on research topics. Students will also gain an insight into British culture by learning about aspects of British history, literature, music, food and sport.

Academic Programme

Apart from intensive English Language preparation, students will also be taught core academic subjects (Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) to help them adjust to the specific demands of British education. The weekly breakdown of hours will include eight hours of English Language and two hours per each other subject.
