Enrichment week – Monday

Posted: 15th February 2021

It’s day one of our February enrichment week at Cardiff Sixth Form College. Usually this week our students would be on work experience placements or travelling abroad on one of our February school trips, unfortunately of course that cannot happen this week. Instead we have worked hard as a college to ensure there are plenty of activities for the students to safely take part in!

AM – CAREERS PRESENTATIONS

This morning there were a range of talks arranged by our Careers team and Physics department for student to take part in.

The first presentation was by Pierre Korysko who is working as a postdoc on the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator at CERN in Geneva and has worked at CERN for more than 4 years. He spoke to our students about the work being carried out at CERN, trying to answer the Big Science questions, as well as explaining how CERN is assisting in the fight against Covid-19.

This was followed by a presentation by Catarina Sobreira, who is completing a PhD in Forensic Chemistry at University of Dundee, who spoke about the career path of Forensic Sciences based on her experiences.

A team of speakers from University of Birmingham spoke to our students about studying Natural Sciences or Engineering at University and the career opportunities that would be open to them as well as industrial placement experiences.

The final presentation of the day was by Sandy Kelly who is part of the Commercial Graduate Trainee at EDF Energy. He told students about his career path after studying Engineering at University and the importance of gaining real world placements and experiences in the industry before graduation from University.

PM – BOARDING ACTVITIES

After another fantastic lunch of ‘Curry House Monday’ provided by our canteen, the afternoon student activities took a different turn! Students competed in a murder mystery game to try and discover who killed Mr Collier with the help of Detective Kris! The suspects were Cerys Williamson, Michelle Jones, Paul Fletcher, James Owens and Georgina Hughes!

Students were also offered to take part in the daily Creative Conundrum which today was to write a short story of 500 words which had to start and finish with 2 of the following sentences:

  • She slowly opened her eyes
  • It started quietly at first, then grew louder
  • It didn’t seem real
  • He opened the box
  • They tried their best, every time
  • The sun seemed to shine a little brighter that day
  • His breath caught the cold, creating a cloud of air
  • She planted her feet sturdily on the ground

Plenty of things happening today at CSFC and more planned for tomorrow. Stay up to date via our social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
