DEBATING MATTERS REGIONAL FINAL IN BATH

Posted: 4th May 2017

On Friday 28th April, five students travelled to Bath Spa University to take part in the regional round of the Debating Matters Competition.

The Debating Matters Competition gives young people the opportunity to debate contemporary issues in an engaging format, ensuring that their ideas and beliefs are truly heard.

The five students who took part in this round of the competition – competing against Truro School, Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr, St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School, and Chosen Hill School – were Quinn Liang, Tri Tu Minh, Tabitha Balogun, Andrew Mak and Kristina Abraamyan.

Congratulations to Quinn and Tri, who won the first round on the motion, “Political parties are bad for democracy”. Well done also to Tabitha and Andrew, who put forward a strong defence on the motion, “The constant monitoring of our health does more harm than good.”

Both sides delivered strong arguments and the result was a split decision by the judges, with the decision finally being made in favour of Truro School.

Kristina is also to be congratulated for the quality of the questions she put to the debaters, which resulted in her being awarded Best Individual Speaker, and to Tabitha who was announced as the third Best Individual Speaker.
