Jack Tonge, an A2 student from the college has been representing the Cayman Islands at Rugby Sevens in the Commonwealth Youth Games.
Up to 1000 young Commonwealth athletes aged 14-18 represented their country and competed for 107 Gold Medals in 9 sports over 5 days at the Vth Commonwealth Youth Games, which took place in the Pacific island nation of Samoa on the 5-11 September 2015.
Jack was born in the Cayman Islands but his family home is now on the Island of Jersey, whilst he studies at Cardiff Sixth Form College. He is pictured above passing the ball out from a ruck at the Apia Park Stadium.
Jack’s mum, Paula reflected on his time representing his country at the games:Overall, it is a very tough call for the tiny Cayman Islands, as all the teams are world-class and very experienced.
Professional rugby sevens teams from neighbouring islands like Fiji prove stiff competition for the amateur Cayman side. But that didn’t dampen the efforts of Jack and his team mates;
The team spirit is strong and Jack is personally trying extremely hard, in this once in a lifetime experience’.
The eventual winners of the competition were South Africa, defeating Australia in the final. The bronze medal match was between Samoa and England with Samoa claiming the third place with a very narrow and hard fought victory 12-10.
