The Cambridge Schools Debating Competition is one of the biggest debating competitions for school children in the world. Each year, over one thousand talented youngsters compete to make it to Cambridge for the tournament finals for the prestigious honour of being named the schools’ champion.
Four teams were sent from Cardiff Sixth Form College to compete in the preliminary rounds, with students Elliott McNeil and Sean Lee gaining places in the final, held in Cambridge on 28th February. Although they did not win the competition this year, our students did exceptionally well reaching the final of the most challenging debating competition in the UK.
The Debating Society was also fortunate to once again be sponsored by Cardiff Bay Rotary for the Rotary Youth speaks competition held at Cardiff Golf Club. The team comprised of Calum Wincott who took the role of chairperson, Elliott MacNeil the speaker and Seren Jones-Reddy who gave the vote of thanks. Elliot spoke on the dangers of nuclear power and how it will affect the youth of today.
The team displayed a professional approach to public speaking, with a lively and engaging performance. They achieved a very creditable second place at the event.
