CSFC students have been crowned regional qualifiers of the Debating Matters Competition. Debating Matters offers a fresh, accessible and engaging format for debating contemporary issues. The competition has successfully pionered a format for debate that takes ideas, argument and young people seriously. The focus is on content and substance over style, encouraging young people to engage in an intelligent contest of ideas and holding up their ideas to critical scrutiny. The four students from CFSC - Mpho Molosiwa, Moustafa Sabry, Kitso Mokhurutshe, Thamani Mazhani - debated two interesting and controversial matters: the commerical planting of GM crops, and the question of whether supermarkets are bad for local communities. The competition took place in Prestatyn in North Wales. Mpho, who is also the college's Deputy International Head Boy, said this of the competition: "Debating Matters was a unique experience. As debaters we felt like we were challenged like never before. The panel and audience really questioned your stance and make you consider other perspectives. As individuals it encouraged us to grow, and have more intellectual and critical conversations. It has also encouraged us to stay informed and appreciate difficulties that policy makers face in the real world. Winning the regional qualifiers was a great feeling as we had put a lot of work into it and we stuck to our side of the motions to the end and presented concrete arguments." The students will face the regional finals in Manchester on the 24th April. For more information on this competition, please visit the Debating Matters website at http://www.debatingmatters.com/ |
