College Policies
Cardiff Sixth Form College Policies.
Below you will find some details on the most important of the college’s policies.
More detailed information can be found in the Student Handbook and the college’s Prospectus.
Copies of both are available on request from Cardiff Sixth Form College.
Admissions Policy
-
Any student expressing interest in the college is invited to attend an “Observation Day”. These sessions allow the visitor to sit in on lessons and speak to both staff and students.
-
All application forms received are considered by two senior members of college staff.
-
All aspects of the Application Form and accompanying documents are taken into account when selecting students for interview.
-
Applicants resident in the UK are required to attend the college for the interview. International students would be offered the option of being interviewed by CSFC staff at an overseas Education Fair or to be interviewed via skype.
-
Applicants are required to sit the college’s Entrance Tests in the subjects they have selected to study.
-
Offers can be either conditional or unconditional on academic grounds. Non- academic conditions are attached to all offers, relating to the provision of documents.
-
Offers made to ALL students would include reference to demonstrated levels of proficiency in English Language
-
The academic conditions attached to offers would be based on the qualifications being taken. The standard offer for GCSE exams would be 6 A* grades which must include the subjects to be taken at A level (or the equivalent in qualifications of a comparable standard).
-
Later in the academic year, students holding confirmed offers ofplaces would be sent full details of term dates, registration procedures plus a copy of the Student Handbook.
Attendance Policy
-
It is college policy that attendance at ALL classes that you are enrolled for is COMPULSORY.
-
Planned absences from the college must be reported to the general office as soon as date(s) are known.
-
All students are expected to attend every lesson required by their course as well as any other social activities/educational trips organised as part of the course.
-
Registers will be taken at the start of every timetabled lesson and lateness will attract sanctions – the teacher may refuse entry to the lesson if you are very late and it may be marked as ‘an unauthorised absence’.
-
Failure to attend any given lesson without an adequate reason could result in disciplinary action being taken and where necessary, the relevant authorities, e.g. UKBA being notified.
Discipline Policy
-
The college operates a system of issuing Formal Warnings. Formal warnings are issued after a verbal warning has been given and are used in any instance of breach of college rules.
-
A third Formal Warning is likely to lead to permanent exclusion from the college.
-
If an offence is considered serious enough, the case will be forwarded to the Disciplinary Panel.
-
Cardiff Sixth Form College has a Disciplinary Panel made up of senior members of staff which meets when a serious breach of discipline occurs and which makes final decisions on all matters involving discipline.
-
All parties will be informed formally, in writing, of the panel’s decision.
-
Letters will be sent within 24hrs of the panel reaching a decision.
-
The college reserves the right to require a student to leave the college within 48hrs if the incident is considered to warrant it.
Bullying Policy
-
Cardiff Sixth Form College does not tolerate any form of misconduct either between staff or students. Bullying behaviour can include name-calling, threats, physical abuse and isolating an individual from a group.
-
If this should occur report the problem to a senior member of staff and make an appointment to see the Vice Principal, Lindsay Thompson who will take appropriate action.
-
You may as an individual take the matter directly to the LEA explaining the situation and how you would like to see it dealt with. The address is available at the office.
College Policy on Alcohol.
-
The college’s policy on the consumption of alcohol is “zero tolerance”. Any breach of this rule will result in disciplinary action being taken and could ultimately result in expulsion.
-
Boarding students need to be aware that this rule covers both teaching and accommodation sites.
College Policy on Drugs.
-
The college operates a zero tolerance policy with regard to drugs. If a student is found to be in possession of or involved in the supply of drugs or any other harmful substance, the college will enforce the disciplinary code which could ultimately result in expulsion.
College Policy on Dress.
-
Students are expected to dress in line with the college’s Dress Code at all times in the college. The Dress Code details are provided at registration and are displayed on college notice boards.
Child Protection Policy
-
The decisionto make a referral, which could activate a child protection investigation, is a serious one, which requires careful judgement by all concerned.
-
The college has appointed a designated member of staff (Mrs Lindsay Thompson) to co-ordinate action within the school and liaise with other agencies on suspected abuse cases.
-
The designated person refers these cases to, or discusses them with the investigating agencies in line with the procedures established by the local Area Child Protection Committees and by the LEA.
-
A member of staff, either the designated person or the member of staff who knows the student best, will contribute to the strategy discussion of the school’s knowledge of the student.
Safe-guarding Students
-
As part of its commitment to the welfare of students, all those who are under 18 years of age have designated guardians who act in loco parentis. In the majority of cases the guardian is ‘the college’; for students who stay with a family (home-stay) it is the host adult(s), and finally there is the option for the student to nominate his/her own guardian. Those who are under 16 years of age are obliged to see the Vice Principal on a daily basis. A Warden does nightly patrols to ensure that each boarder is where he/she is supposed to be. Cctv cameras are a feature of most of the residences.
Equal Opportunities Policy
-
Cardiff Sixth Form College is committed to a teaching environment that promotes equality of opportunity and does not tolerate any form of discrimination.
-
The ethos of the college is to promote the ability of every individual to achieve their maximum potential in a supportive and encouraging environment. Applicants, students and staff will be treated at all times in a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory way and will be selected and assessed solely on the basis of merit, ability and potential regardless of gender, ethnicity, religious or political beliefs, race, disability, socio-economic background or country of origin.
-
The college will not tolerate any form of discrimination, victimisation or bullying, whether perceived or actual, and expects all interaction to be free from prejudice or harassment.
Complaints Policy
-
Students are able to raise any concerns or complaints they may have in two ways –
-
Each student has a monthly Progress Meeting with the Vice Principal and has the opportunity to raise and discuss any concerns, either academic or social.
-
Feedback Forms are available for students to request a meeting with a named member of staff to discuss any issues or worries.
-
In the event that a solution cannot be reached via the above, a complaint would be forwarded to a panel consisting of the Principal and Vice Principal who would implement suitable action and whose decision would be considered to be final
-
All complaints/concerns are dealt with promptly and discreetly, taking into account the confidentiality and well- being of the student/s at all times.
Health and Safety Policy
